Research Policy
The University’s research policies provide support for the development and implementation of the university’s research strategy, setting out measures to encourage appropriate behaviours to achieve our strategic aims.
Our policies that affect research and related activities:
Research integrity
The Macquarie University Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research outlines standards of responsible and ethical conduct expected of all persons engaged in research under the auspices of Macquarie University. The University has developed the Macquarie Research Code to meet the standards set out in the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (2018).
Animal Ethics
The Animal Use for Scientific Purposes Policy establishes the principles that underpin the University’s approach concerning responsibilities relating to the ethical and humane use of animals for scientific purposes. The implementation of this policy and its related procedures and guidelines will facilitate compliance with relevant legislation, minimising risk to the University while promoting high quality research and teaching.
Human Ethics
The Human Research Ethics Policy establishes how Macquarie University fulfils its responsibilities for ensuring compliance with the National Health and Medical Research Council’s National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007) and the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (2018).
Biosafety and Biosecurity
The Biosafety and Biosecurity Policy establishes the safety framework for research and teaching involving microorganisms and biohazardous materials. Implementation of this policy facilitates Macquarie University compliance with relevant legislation, promotes high-quality research and teaching, and minimises risks to human and animal health, and the environment.
Export Controls and Sanctions
The Export Controls and Sanctions Policy sets out the University’s commitment to comply with export controls and sanctions laws, and will assist the University’s (including its Controlled Entities’) researchers, academics other relevant personnel, and students to comply with these obligations.
Faculty Research Centres
The Faculty Research Centres Policy establishes the principles that underpin the University’s approach to the establishment, management, performance, review and extension of Faculty Research Centres at Macquarie University. The Procedure and Guideline provide further information concerning the expectations of the University regarding the operation of such Centres.
Funding from the Tobacco Industry
The Funding from the Tobacco Industry Policy establishes Macquarie University's principle that it will not accept funding and other forms of support from the Tobacco Industry.
Open Access
The Open Access Policy establishes the principles that underpin the University’s approach to providing equitable, world-wide access to the scholarly and research output of Macquarie University.
Outside Studies Program
The Outside Studies Program Policy outlines how Macquarie University offers its Outside Studies Program (OSP) to academic staff. OSP is implemented through an OSP Fellowships program that incorporates two Fellowships, one Internal and the other External.
Research Overheads and Infrastructure Costs Policy
The Research Overheads and Infrastructure Costs Policy came into effect on 1 July 2020 and replaces the Research Indirect Costs (Overheads) Policy. The new policy outlines the requirement to include a contribution towards the overhead and infrastructure costs incurred by the University for external research grants, collaborations, partnerships and consultancies and sets out certain exemptions to that requirement. The policy also details how much the minimum contribution should be and how it will be allocated internally.
